Principal’s Message

It is a great privilege to lead Sylvania High School as Principal and have the opportunity to further strengthen the exceptional outcomes achieved by the school. As Principal, my commitment is to always provide high quality education that is renowned by the local as well as system wide community. I have high expectations for my staff as well as myself, to ensure every student in every classroom improves every year and engages in relevant and meaningful learning experiences that enhance their potential.

As a school, we acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land and waterways on which Sylvania High School resides, the Dharawal people of the Eora nation. We acknowledge the continuous ties Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have with this land as the oldest continuing culture in the world, by breathing life into the narratives, language and customs of our First Nation peoples.

We are a school rich in culture and defined by a set of beliefs that hold student learning and wellbeing at the centre.
Our young people are driven by an innate sense of perseverance, determination and commitment, supported by
targeted wellbeing programs and initiatives. We have a sustained focus on growth and attainment, quality teaching
and learning, and inclusive school culture. This focus is underpinned by our core values of respect and responsibility, providing the foundation for students to strive for academic excellence and positively impact the lives of others. We believe promoting, amplifying and valuing students’ voices enables them to be empowered learners who are deeply engaged in shaping the world around them, and sustaining the threads of civility and dignity in our democratic society. We cater for students of all abilities irrespective of their cultural, religious or socio-economic backgrounds,  forging an inclusive school culture that upholds the true spirit of diversity and acceptance. At our school, teachers encourage students to engage in spirited and informed debate about topics passionate to them, and instill a strong sense of pride in being part of such a collaborative and aspirational learning community that values real world experiences and complex ethical thinking.

In the 2020 HSC, our school out-performed the majority of high schools across the Sutherland Shire local networks, ranking third highest in the area with 256 Band 5 and 6 results, 28 students identified as Distinguished Achievers and over 15% of Year 12 students received an ATAR above 90. This outstanding achievement is testament to the high standards of performance we expect for ourselves and each other, as well as our expertise in lifting achievement. We offer a breadth of curriculum that responds to the individual learning preferences of students, and also enriches the capabilities of our high potential, gifted and highly gifted students. Whilst we have a dedicated enrichment class in every year group for those students who excel in their academic fields, we also acknowledge that all students in every classroom need to be inspired and enriched in their learning in order to explore their full potential. This commitment is seen every day through differentiated learning and assessment for students, as well as diverse and creative pathways both within and beyond the curriculum. Sylvania High School continues to be the school of choice in the local and broader community for its high-quality responsive approach, and positive culture. We proudly uphold equal access and opportunity for all students, and espouse an ethos and language that intertwines wellbeing with learning to enable all our young people to lead flourishing lives.
