Our Vice-Captain Taylor Aiken is a strong believer of raising awareness of mental health, suicide and support networks such as Headspace so she decided to invite BONDI Rescue lifeguards, Trent “Maxi” Maxwell and Jesse Pollock to share their latest venture with our school. As part of their project, The Ride: East Coast, they were able to spread the word about a big goal — a 2500-kilometre ride in September from Sydney to Cairns on jet skis to raise the profile of mental health charity, Headspace.
Through their work on the popular television show, lifeguards often deal with incidents of suicide at the notorious Gap at South Head. One in four youths between the ages of 12-25 will suffer from a form of depression and a total of 30 per cent will at some stage contemplate suicide, which is the biggest killer of young Australians. In an effort to prevent more deaths, the lifeguards will take to the ocean. Our school supported their trip and raised $700.
